Born on September 12, 1962, in Detroit, Michigan, Atkins began his music career in the early 1980s as a member of the duo Cybotron alongside Richard "3070" Davis. Their 1982 single "Clear," which fused elements of electro, funk, and synth-pop, became a blueprint for the emerging techno sound.
In 1985, Atkins launched his solo career under the alias Model 500, releasing the seminal track "No UFOs" on his own Metroplex label. This track, along with subsequent releases like "Night Drive" and "The Chase," cemented his reputation as a key innovator in electronic music. Atkins' music is characterized by its futuristic themes, mechanical beats, and deep, soulful melodies, reflecting the industrial landscape of Detroit.
Throughout the late 1980s and 1990s, Atkins continued to influence the techno scene both in the U.S. and internationally. His work with the collective Deep Space Soundworks and performances at iconic venues like the Music Institute helped foster Detroit's techno community.
