3MB: The Collaborative Force
In addition to his solo work, Juan Atkins was instrumental in forming the group 3MB (Three Men in Berlin) alongside Moritz von Oswald and Thomas Fehlmann. This collaborative effort represented a fusion of Detroit techno with Berlin’s burgeoning electronic scene, resulting in a series of influential recordings that bridged the gap between two distinct musical landscapes.
Formed in the early 1990s, 3MB brought together Atkins’s expertise in techno with von Oswald’s background in dub and electronic experimentation. The group’s debut album, "3MB Featuring Magic Juan Atkins," released in 1992, showcased a blend of hypnotic rhythms, atmospheric textures, and intricate sound design. Tracks like "Jazz Is the Teacher" and "The 4th Quarter" exemplified their ability to transcend genre boundaries while maintaining a deep-rooted respect for electronic music’s underground roots.
